Jaguar Land Rover AJ126 3.0 V6 Supercharged Engine Guide: Models, Why It's in High Demand, Common Faults & Replacement

The Jaguar Land Rover AJ126 is one of the most recognisable petrol engines in the modern JLR line-up. A supercharged 3.0-litre V6 with up to 380 HP, it powers everything from the Range Rover Sport to the F-Type sports car. If you own a JLR vehicle with this engine — or you're shopping for a replacement — this guide explains exactly what the AJ126 is, where it's fitted, why it's so highly demanded, the faults to watch for, and where to buy a quality used or rebuilt unit.

    What Is the AJ126 Engine?

Introduced in 2013, the AJ126 (also marketed as the 3.0 V6 Supercharged) was developed by Jaguar Land Rover as a six-cylinder derivative of the famous AJ133 5.0 V8. Both engines share the same production line in Wolverhampton, the same 90° V architecture, the same bore spacing and many internal components — JLR essentially removed two cylinders from the V8 and added a Roots-type supercharger to retain similar power.

    • Displacement: 2,995 cc (3.0-litre)
    • Configuration: 90° V6, supercharged, direct injection
    • Supercharger: Eaton TVS R1320 twin-vortex Roots-type
    • Power outputs: 340 HP and 380 HP (and tuned 460 HP+ in some F-Type variants)
    • Torque: 450 Nm / 460 Nm
    • Block: aluminium with cast-iron liners
    • Heads: aluminium, four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing

Which Models Use the AJ126 V6 Supercharged?

The AJ126 has been one of JLR's most widely deployed petrol engines. You'll find it in:

    • Range Rover (L405) — 3.0 V6 SC, 2013–2022
    • Range Rover Sport (L494) — 3.0 V6 SC, 2013–2022 (including SE, HSE, HST)
    • Land Rover Discovery 5 (L462) — 3.0 Si6, 2017–2020
    • Jaguar F-Type (X152) — 340 HP, 380 HP and 460 HP variants, 2013–2024
    • Jaguar F-Pace (X761) — 35t / 380 HP, 2016–2020
    • Jaguar XE (X760) — S 380 HP, 2015–2020
    • Jaguar XF (X260) — S 380 HP, 2015–2020
    • Jaguar XJ (X351) — 3.0 V6 SC, 2013–2019

Why the AJ126 Is in High Demand

    1. It Replaces a Failed Petrol V6 in High-Value Vehicles

Most vehicles fitted with the AJ126 are premium models worth €25,000–€80,000+ even at high mileage. A failed engine doesn't write the car off — a quality replacement restores significant value.

    2. Strong Performance & Refinement

With supercharged response (no turbo lag), 380 HP, and a smooth V6 character, the AJ126 delivers genuine sports-car performance in the F-Type and effortless overtaking torque in the Range Rover Sport.

    3. Shared Architecture With the AJ133 V8

Because the AJ126 shares so many internal parts with the 5.0 V8, parts availability, repair knowledge and tuning support are excellent. Many specialists who service the V8 work on the V6 with the same tools and procedures.

    4. Limited Used Supply

The AJ126 was phased out as JLR transitioned to the Ingenium straight-six and electrified powertrains. Production has effectively ended, which means used and rebuilt units are increasingly sought after for repairs to the existing fleet.

    5. Tuning Potential

With a smaller supercharger pulley, intercooler upgrade and ECU remap, AJ126 engines routinely produce 430–480 HP with strong reliability — making them a popular base for F-Type and Range Rover Sport tuning builds.

Common AJ126 Faults & Weak Points

Although the AJ126 is fundamentally a robust engine, certain weaknesses are well documented:

    1. Timing Chain Tensioner Wear (Pre-2014 Units)

Early AJ126 engines (and the related AJ133 V8) suffered from premature timing chain tensioner wear. Failure can cause the chain to jump teeth — leading to bent valves and catastrophic damage. Upgraded tensioners have been available since 2013–2014. Symptoms: rattling on cold start that lasts more than a couple of seconds, particularly noticeable at the front of the engine.

    2. Piston & Cylinder Bore Failure (2013–2020 Models)

One of the most discussed AJ126 issues is piston ring land cracking and cylinder bore scoring, which can affect both the V6 and V8 variants. Symptoms include sudden loss of compression on one cylinder, oil consumption, blue exhaust smoke, and misfire codes. The fix is typically a short-block or full engine replacement.

    3. Supercharger Snout / Coupler Wear

The Eaton supercharger is durable, but the front nose-drive coupler can wear out at higher mileages, causing a rattling noise from the top of the engine. The snout assembly can be rebuilt independently — a much cheaper repair than a new supercharger.

    4. Coolant Leaks (Plastic Pipework & Crossover Pipe)

The plastic coolant crossover pipe under the supercharger can crack with age and heat cycling. Replacement requires removing the supercharger, so labour cost is significant. Always inspect coolant level history before purchase.

    5. Water Pump Failure

The electrically-driven water pump has a finite life and typically needs replacement around 100,000–150,000 km. Failure causes overheating warnings and possible head damage if ignored.

    6. Carbon Buildup on Intake Valves

As a direct-injection engine, the AJ126 has no fuel washing the intake valves. Carbon deposits build up over time, causing rough idle, misfires and reduced performance. Walnut blasting every 80,000–100,000 km is recommended.

    7. Crankshaft Pulley (Harmonic Balancer) Failure

The bonded rubber harmonic balancer can delaminate, causing belt squeal, vibration, and ultimately accessory drive failure. Replacement is straightforward and inexpensive if caught early.

    8. Oil Cooler Leaks

The engine oil cooler O-rings can fail, mixing oil and coolant. Symptoms: milky residue under the oil cap, falling coolant level, oil contamination of the expansion tank.

    AJ126 Service Requirements

    • Oil change: every 10,000–12,000 km with JLR-approved 5W-30 (do not stretch to 25,000 km service intervals on this engine)
    • Spark plugs: every 60,000 km
    • Supercharger oil: every 100,000 km — often forgotten, but critical
    • Coolant: full flush every 4 years
    • Walnut-blast intake valves: every 80,000–100,000 km
    • Water pump: inspect at 100,000 km, replace by 150,000 km

What to Check When Buying a Used AJ126 or AJ126-Powered Vehicle

    • Cold-start audio — listen for any timing chain rattle in the first 5 seconds
    • Compression test — confirm even compression across all six cylinders
    • Diagnostic scan — check for misfire counters and stored codes
    • Oil cap & expansion tank — milky residue points to oil cooler or head gasket issues
    • Service history — short-interval oil changes with JLR-approved oil are essential
    • Supercharger noise — a clean whine is normal; rattling indicates snout wear

    Expected AJ126 Lifespan

    • Well-maintained stock engine: 250,000–350,000 km
    • Lightly tuned (430–460 HP): 180,000–250,000 km
    • Heavily tuned / track use: 100,000–180,000 km, with higher risk of bore and piston issues
